One-way plea for busy school run road

Posted by Alan Hayes on Jan 27, 12 10:41 AM in

A BID to make a busy 'school run' route into a one way street has been backed by nearly 500 residents.
St Mary's Road in Hayes is heavily used by parents taking their children to and from Dr Tripletts Primary School nearby in Hemmen Lane.
497 people have signed a petition calling on Hillingdon Council to make the residential street one-way, going southbound from its junction with Hemmen Lane to Church Road.
Local people say congestion has lead to near misses and minor collisions and motorists are forced to take bends on the wrong side of the road.
However, police say there has just been one accident there in the past three years.
The residents' case was presented at a petition meeting at the Civic Centre, in High Street, Uxbridge, on Wednesday last week.
The council says any change would need the approval of people in nearby roads, and warned the change could lead to higher speeds, but promised to look into options.

A SUBWAY in Yeading once feared by parents - and the scene of a horrific attack - is being used again, thanks to CCTV cameras installed after a campaign by local people.

The subway in Carlyon Road, which goes under The Parkway A312 dual carriageway, had been a magnet for street drinkers and yobs.

THE 230 workers at the Nestle factory have started planning their future following the news their jobs are on the line.

The company announced last week that it would be closing the plant in North Hyde Gardens, Hayes, and moving its coffee production to Derbyshire.

The closure is expected to be phased, with the first workers leaving in 2013, and the factory to shut its doors for good by the end of 2014.

A FRAUDSTER who lied about her family members being involved in a car accident to trick good samaritans out of cash has been jailed.

Sukhvinder Dhillon, 38, of Bath Road, West Drayton, was sentenced to 12 months behind bars after being found in possession of a coat she also took from one of her victims.

On four separate occasions Dhillon knocked on doors, pretending to be in trouble and asking residents for emergency cash.

PC Dali Bassi, of the Heathrow Villages Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "She was knocking on people's doors giving a sob story. She would say her mum or sister had been in a car accident and she needed money for a taxi to get to Wexham Park Hospital, Slough, offering to come and give the money back.

"She was given between £50 and £70 and made more than £200 in total. She was tugging on people's heart strings for her own gain."

Dhillon admitted to doing this on four separate occasions in November and December, each in Harlington.

She never returned to any of the houses to hand back the cash.

PC Bassi said: "The victims were all disgusted when they found out it was a scam.

"They had made enquiries and realised she did not live at the address she had given them.

"We started investigating; after making enquiries her name came up. When we went to speak to her she was wearing a coat one of her victims had kindly given her."

Dhillon was arrested and appeared at Isleworth Crown Court on January 13. She was sentenced to a year in jail.

A REDUCED speed limit in a busy road linking Hillingdon and Ealing has been welcomed by neighbours and schools.

On Thursday last week (19), a 30mph limit came into force along the top half of Yeading Lane, Hayes, between Edmunds Close and the White Hart roundabout, over the borough's border into Ealing.

The southern stretch, from Uxbridge Road up to Edmunds Close, was already 30mph.

A TEENAGER was jumped by a gang of thugs carrying baseball bats and knuckle dusters.

The 19-year-old victim was cycling in Yeading Lane with a friend just before 7.30pm on January 8.

Thieves who raided two self-storage blocks in December are still being sought by police.

A 'vast amount' of people's personal property was stolen from two Shugard lock-up facilities within a week of each other, as reported by the Gazette at the time.

Warfa Jama (pictured) and Hamad Allatteaby, both 18, were convicted for their parts in a violent robbery in Pinkwell Avenue, Hayes, on April 5.

jgr_nlr_gustavson_1.jpgA 'MILD MANNERED' man repeatedly stomped on a neighbour's face in the street, wrongly telling witnesses that he deserved it 'because he was a paedophile'.

Paul Gustavson, of Weald Way, Hayes, was last week jailed for the attack, which was seen by a couple walking along Portland Road, Hayes, on the evening of September 21.

jgr_nlr_khatmarkham_1.jpgAN INVESTIGATION into the 'herbal high' khat, carried out by the borough last year, has been discussed in the House of Commons.

On Wednesday last week, Hillingdon Council was congratulated in parliament for its work by Conservative MP Mark Lancaster who called on the government to 'fulfil their very clear commitment' to ban the drug.

Khat is a plant grown in the Horn of Africa, and users chew its leaves to release stimulants.
