STUDENTS and staff at Harlington Community School bid a fond farewell to their headteacher retiring after 20 years of service.

Neil Sherman joined the school in 1979 as a maths teacher, before leaving for a brief spell and returning as deputy head.

He was appointed headteacher at the school, in Pinkwell Lane, Hayes, eight years ago.

More than 100 pupils and past and present staff joined Mr Sherman to wish him well on Monday (14).

Refreshments were provided by the school's hospitality and catering diploma students.

Acting head teacher Liz Horrigan and Graham Tomlin, chair of governors, thanked Mr Sherman for his many achievements at the school.

Mr Tomlin said: "Neil Sherman has been a great supporter of the school over many years.

"He has tackled the problems of having to manage ever more challenging circumstances with fewer resources and has turned under achievement by pupils into a thing of the past.

"Many heartfelt messages from staff and students were voiced, thanking him for his constant support and belief in Harlington's continuing success.

"His time at Harlington has seen him develop friends among parents, students, teachers and governors, many of whom came to wish him, his wife and two sons the very best for the future."

We'd like to hear from you.
