Hayes protestors sentenced after power station stunt

A group of climate change demonstrators admitted to staging a three-day protest at a power station at Oxford Magistrates Court yesterday (February 1).

Among the protestors were Aimee Georgiou-Lornand, 18, of Hudson Road, Hayes, who was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £70 costs.

Oscar Cooper, 19, also of Hudson Road, had previous protest-related convictions and was given 60 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £70 costs.

The group, made up of ten men and nine women, pleaded guilty to obstructing a person engaged in a lawful activity after the protest at Didcot Power Station on October 26.

The court heard how part of the group parked themselves at a conveyor belt, and the remaining members set up camp atop the Station's chimney.

They were arrested on October 28 after voluntarily vacating their spots.

One of the demonstrators, Carl Van Tonder, 20, of Wellington Street, North Oxford, denied the offence and is due to appear back at Oxford Magistrates Court on February 22 for trial.
